Heidi Dokulil
I am a design and architecture writer based in Sydney involved in a broad sweep of projects focused on architecture, design and innovation, and projects that bring people and design together. I have honed my skills writing feature stories and books, producing talks and workshops, and interviewing influential thinkers about design and the meaningful ways it improves our lives.
I began my career as a cub reporter. I worked for Interior Architecture magazine and was an editor of architecture magazine Monument. To expand my interests, I established my own studio where I co-curated PechaKucha Night Sydney; worked on exhibitions including ‘Designing for the Asia Pacific’ in Brisbane and ‘Conversations of Things New’ in Sydney and Melbourne; launched the Happy Talk House design and workshop series with Liane Rossler for Art & About Sydney; co-founded the mentorship program ‘Springboard: entrepreneurship for designers’ with funding from the Australian government. In 2026 I launched The New Set with writer and photographer, Frances Mocnik, a magazine that’s the nexus of all of the ideas I am passionate about: architecture, design, sustainability and travel, and how we can live in balance with the environment around us.
As a writer, I contribute to magazines T Australia; The New York Times Style magazine, ArchitectureAU, Houses Magazine and more space, and work on books that include ‘Burley Katon Halliday’ published by Thames and Hudson, and ‘Sydney Brutalism’, published by NewSouth. I am currently curating an exhibition about Sydney brutalism for the Museum of Sydney that opens in 2027.
